Multi-Unit Franchisee Insight - Business Philosophy & Management Style - Part 4

We talk to successful multi-unit operators regularly here at Franchise Update Media. These busy on-the-go people share great insight and wisdom with us through our profile stories in Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine. Here, from our archives, are some insightful responses from some of these franchisees.

Business philosophy:
Rylan Miller: My philosophy comes from a quote that inspires me: "Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." I found this quote when I was getting my commercial pilot's license and it has resonated with me ever since. This is truly the feeling I get when I fly an airplane, but that feeling is also so similar to how it feels when building relationships, mentoring leaders, and building businesses. There is an attraction to business that can only be satisfied by more business.

Management method or style:
Rylan: Consultative. I find that giving employees and especially leaders in the businesses the ability to be heard helps foster trust and build strong relationships.
Jennifer Miller: Lead from the front. There is not anything I would ask my employees to do that I would not first do myself.

Business philosophy:
If you have the right ideas, the right people, and right system in place, money will follow you. Start with a 100-year dream. Then work your way down to a 10-year vision, 3-year business plan and strategy, 1-year operating plan, and daily actions. Business is not about transactions. It's about building relationships. Always leave something on the table. I do get burned by this philosophy for sure, but I know I can sleep well at night.

Management method or style:
BLD, which stands for Building Lives and Dreams. We have six pillars that capture it all: 1) Drive Results; 2) Make Money; 3) Explore the World; Have Fun; 5) Do Good; 6) Grow Your Mind. I try to make decisions based on these principles.
