Report Says Foodservice Industry Down Slightly In October

The softness in travel and leisure segments combined with less traffic in independent restaurants gave Technomic’s TIndex report a slight decline from September to October, dropping from 98.9 to 97.8. The monthly TIndex report keeps tabs on the foodservice industry health.

“Based on this data, the industry is down 2.2% over a two-year basis,” said Joe Pawlak, managing principal at Technomic. “However, foodservice has grown by 18.5% compared to the same month in 2020. It will be interesting to see how the numbers shift going into the holiday season and as concerns of new Covid-19 variants continue to pop up.”

TIndex is Technomic’s index on the total U.S. industry, reported monthly, comparing performance to the same month in 2019. TIndex includes inflation and allows for industry growth analysis on a year-over-year basis for the same month. The regular report uses a variety of data sets, including operator transaction, consumer visit tracking, and distributor sales information. The data is then weighted and evaluated to align with a representation of the total foodservice industry.
